HiFi Mojo: Music

Last Time I Saw Phil

(HiFi MoJo)

Marty Henninger Stackin' BB's Music CP 2005 BMI
A gospel-flavored farewell to a much-loved friend and fellow traveler, Phil Haxton. I wrote this the night before his memorial service. Recorded live in Gaddis’ basement, the first song HiFi MoJo ever recorded. Ben plays the B-3 and kicks bass, while Gaddis plays some sweet slide. Hope you like it Phil.
Last Time I Saw Phil

The last time I saw Phil, we were packin' up our gear.
Another night of music, was ringin' in our ears.
We were rollin' up cords, finishing our beers,
Outside a winter rain, was fallin' down like tears.
The last time I saw Phil, we were packin' up our gear.

We were shakin' our heads and laughin, talkin' 'bout the past.
Always bettin' on a dream, anytime the dice were cast.
And the bands we'd been in, gone away so fast.
You'd wish some would stick around, but nothin' ever lasts.
The last time I saw Phil, we talked about the past.

I can see him playin' bass guitar, with just a little smile.
Cuttin' us a deep groove, with half-closed eyes
He carried time in his pocket, he always kept it close.
Hand it back to me when I needed it the most.
The last time I saw Phil, he had a little smile.

The last thing I remember, he was payin' up his bill.
Gettin' his free sandwich and payin' up his bill.
Already on his journey, but I didn't know it then.
Someday I will follow, I just don't know when.
Come to think about it, I ain't seen the last of Phil
Come to think about it, I ain't seen the last of Phil
