Smoke and Mirrors

Smoke and mirrors, smoke and mirrors
Peace and prosperity are smoke and mirrors
The rich get the breaks and the poor get the tears
and the middle’s hypnotized by smoke and mirrors

Turn on the T.V. The fog rolls in.
Fall asleep to the repetition,
of celebrity news and non-information,
like a warm, fuzzy blanket, covering the nation.
The rich get fatter while the poor fight the poor.
The middle class sleeps, sedate in the norm.
A headlong rush by each warning sign.
feels like we’re livin’ on borrowed time.

Smoke and mirrors, smoke and mirrors
Peace and prosperity are smoke and mirrors
The rich get the breaks and the poor get the tears
and the middle’s hypnotized by smoke and mirrors

There’s a war going on, but you’d hardly know it,
Can’t see the cost, ‘cause the news won’t show it.
Wives and mothers cryin’, broke down in tears,
their flag-draped coffins, have no place here.
A world at the window, by satellite feed,
I’m as smart or as stupid as I let myself be.
Keep my mind open, my family close,
Keepin’ it real for them is what matters most.

Smoke and mirrors, smoke and mirrors
Peace and prosperity are smoke and mirrors
The rich get the breaks and the poor get the tears
and the middle’s hypnotized by smoke and mirrors

Fed up with leaders, of strength and vigor,
and all the scruples, of action figures.
The country looks rich, but it’s deep in debt.
Don’t you worry ‘bout those bills 'cause they ain’t due yet!
I've worked my whole life, to stay on my feet,
but I’m still two paychecks, from livin’ on the street.
They tell me the good times, are already here,
but I tell you the truth, that’s my biggest fear!
